IEEE 802.15.4 is a standard that defines layers in the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) model. It provides them with a wireless personal area network or WPAN, giving them low-cost, low-speed ubiquitous communication between devices. IEEE 802.15.4 creates the base format for a vast number of standards of upper layers.
It finds its use in areas where remote sensors operate on power, usually without attention. The standard provides communications over distances up to about 10 meters and with maximum transfer data rates of 250 kbps. IEEE 802.15.4 provides an efficient interface of nearby devices with little to no underlying infrastructure. Anticipating that cost reduction will require highly embedded device solutions, the overall concept of IEEE 802.15.4 accepts this.
