Internet of Things: six connection methods

Today we'd like to tell you about each of six common types of IoT connection methods for your projects. Let's start!

Ethernet

Ethernet is one of the fastest reliable connections for the Internet of Things. The main advantage of a wired Ethernet network is a secure connection and work with multiple nodes on the same network. But connecting things to the Internet using Ethernet is not so simple and not always justified.

When designing a system, you need to you need to locate nodes close to the router. Also, hiding and managing wires are not simple. So, if the systems were not initially built in the building, then it is almost impossible to connect them during use.

Wi-Fi

When we talk about wireless devices, Wi-Fi comes first. Everything from wearable devices to smart homes allows users to take action without getting up off the couch.

In addition to the fact that Wi-Fi is wireless, it has fast network speed. However, developing a device with Wi-Fi requires considerable effort due to power consumption and security vulnerabilities. Thus, your team should have a specialist who can find a balance between capabilities, security, and value. Also, take a look at Wi-Fi modules optimized for IoT. These will help reduce time to market and will achieve better performance.

Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN)

You will get to know LPWAN intimately if you decide to develop solutions for monitoring the environment, smart cities, or other global areas. The range of the network of 10 kilometers speaks for itself. It becomes possible to connect devices in hard-to-reach or remote areas. But be prepared that the data transfer speed is significantly lower than the previous connection methods. Besides, it becomes more challenging to maintain nodes due to its location in hard-to-reach places.

Cellular

Cellular communication does not remain aloof from IoT. Widespread adoption of IoT solutions worldwide. The main "BUT" is the price of the issue. To use this connection, you need to negotiate with a mobile service provider, and the subscription price for each node significantly reduces your profit. However, analysts' forecasts show that high-speed 5G can make a difference in favor of increased innovation in IoT.

Satellite

Unfortunately, even a wide range of LPWAN and cellular communications is not enough to cover the entire globe. Satellite communications will help in areas such as logistics. While satellite communications are the most inaccessible, however, the situation may change over time.

Bluetooth

The range of the Bluetooth network reaches a maximum mark of 100 meters, but more often, it is intended for closer distances. Since Bluetooth is only suitable for low power consumption, the most basic version of IoT devices with Bluetooth technology is consumer electronics. Bluetooth 5.0 is a recent update that extends the range of Bluetooth so that it can be used on home networks.
