Promwad Embarks on Implementing High-Performance Ampere ARM Processors
We have started designing our clients’ solutions with chips from Ampere — a major manufacturer of ARM-based processors that successfully compete with Intel in terms of performance, power efficiency and scalability.
Ampere Computing is an American semiconductor company known for its high-performance processors and ARM servers for cloud computing and other telecommunications equipment. Their focus on performance and energy efficiency fits perfectly with our specialisation in designing new data storages and firewalls, developing DPI software, and implementing SPDK and DPDK in our customers' products.
Hare are the key advantages of ARM servers and processors powered by Ampere technologies:
- They surpass similar x86 architecture-based solutions in terms of price, scalability, and suitability for specific workloads.
- They are more energy-efficient compared to x86 processors, allowing you to save costs and create sustainable solutions for our planet with optimal power consumption and carbon footprint.
The company's most notable products include the Ampere Altra family of cloud-native processors, which provide high throughput of up to 30 million IOPS (input/output operations per second). This feature allows connecting to multiple PCIe devices, which is important for developing applications for multimedia, cloud computing, and online transaction processing.
The most powerful processor in the family — the 128-core Ampere Altra Max — is comparable in performance to Intel processors, a leader in the semiconductor industry.
Comparative Analysis of Ampere Altra Max and Intel Xeon Platinum 8280L
The Ampere engineers compared the performance metrics of Ampere Altra Max processors and Intel Xeon Platinum 8280L, and in most criteria, the next-generation Ampere processors showed higher results:

Video stream recording speed by the Ampere processor is already measured in tens of Gbits or even in tens of Gbyte if to integrate SPDK, while an end device can operate for more than three hours without network connection. When working on a project using Ampere processors, the main challenge for engineers is to find the performance limit.
Our Experience with Ampere Processors
At the request of our client, we are developing an energy-efficient edge cloud based on the Ampere chips. These are flexible and scalable connectivity platforms for enterprises and data centres.
The new solution provides high performance for AI-powered supercomputing with application speeds of up to 400 Gbit/s, as well as for simultaneous recording and processing of multiple video streams. The integration capability with popular open-source tools such as DPDK enhances functionality and compatibility.
"Ampere processors impress with their exceptional scalability and performance per unit of energy consumption! They are ideal for lockless applications such as NAS systems managing video streams, or network solutions based on DPDK,"
said Ivan Kuten, Co-Owner & Tech Expert at Promwad.
