Design of Three-Phase Power Meter

Client

A European power sector company.

Challenge

To develop a three-phase device for electricity metering and data transfer to the automated commercial electricity metering system (ASCAPS) in IoT and cloud storage. The meter is designed for single- or bi-directional multi-tariff metering of active and reactive electrical energy and power. The device will also measure electrical network parameters in three-phase, three- or four-wire AC networks.

Solution

We have developed a device based on the STM32L4 series microcontroller and stpm33 and stpm34 analogue frontend. The ST7580 chip was used for PLC data transmission (power line communication).

Promwad engineers have implemented transmission and storage of meter readings to data collection centres of ASCAPS systems and configured automatic event generation. NB-IoT (Narrow Band Internet of Things) and LoRa (Long Range) standards were used for data transfer to the cloud and exchange.

We used LoRa for local data collection in business centres for accounting of local and territorial objects.

The device's configuration has been realised via USB and RS-48 interfaces.

Business Value

The customer received a ready-made device designed as a low-power solution to take advantage of IoT and cloud data transfer via the NB-IoT and LoRA standards.The energy meter has the following features:

  • 5A (10A);
  • three phases 3x230/400 V;
  • electronic display;
  • class 0.2S;
  • installation in the mounting panel;
  • tariff schedule.

The meter is designed to be used indoors or in places with additional protection against environmental influences (cabinet, switchboard).
