Cross-Platform Home Rehabilitation System: End-to-End Development

Project in a Nutshell: We developed an innovative home rehabilitation system to help patients recover after injuries and strokes from the comfort of their homes. The solution includes sensor-based wireless modules, a patient app with personalised exercise programmes, and a web app for clinicians to track progress and adjust rehabilitation plans. Cloud integration ensures data synchronisation between patient and doctor devices. The system accelerated the client’s entry into the home rehabilitation market, providing affordable and convenient recovery tools

Client & Challenge

Our client, a company specialising in medical technology, was keen to enter the growing market for home solutions. The first project he decided to realise was an interactive system for home rehabilitation after injuries and strokes. The main goal was to create an affordable system that patients could use at home.

Why Promwad

Despite the fact that the client specialises in medical technologies, it chose the Promwad team to implement the project for several reasons:

  • Lack of internal resources: hardware, software and cloud development require more resources than the client has.
  • Lack of experience in integrating sensor systems: we provided expertise in building sensor devices and integrating them with interactive applications and cloud services.
  • Compressed timeline: the client needed to get the product to market quickly, and our team was able to implement the project quickly.

Solution

We developed a comprehensive home rehabilitation system including:

  • Wireless touch modules — compact touch and pressure-sensitive devices equipped with gyroscopes and accelerometers to track movements. The modules communicate with the app via Bluetooth Low Energy, ensuring minimal latency.
  • A patient app with a library of 50 hand, leg and body exercises. Difficulty levels are automatically adjusted based on the analysis of progress data.
  • Cloud-based platform integration to store exercise data and synchronise between patient and physician devices.
  • Web app for clinicians with access to patient progress data and the ability to adjust rehabilitation programmes.

How It Works

  1. Personalised Setup: the doctor creates a tailored rehabilitation programme, selecting exercises and difficulty levels.
  1. Patient Training: the patient performs exercises using sensor modules, receiving instant feedback.
  1. Data Synchronisation: training data is automatically uploaded to the cloud, and accessible to both the patient and the doctor.
  1. Progress Monitoring: the doctor tracks progress and adjusts the programme through the app.

How It's Made

The client developed a library of exercises in collaboration with physiotherapists and neurologists. We adapted these exercises to work with sensory modules, adding algorithms for automatic difficulty adjustment and elements of interactive feedback.

The next stages of work on the Promwad team's side included:

  • Integrating pressure sensors, touch sensors, gyroscopes and accelerometers for accurate motion tracking.
  • Development of cross-platform applications.
  • Testing is done to calibrate sensors, improve the interface, and verify that algorithms work correctly.

Software Development

The client worked with a physiotherapist and neurologists to develop a library of exercises, which we adapted to work with the sensory modules.

The applications were developed using cross-platform Qt tools and are available on PCs, tablets, mobile devices, and different operating systems (Windows, Android, iOS).

We developed two apps: one for patients and one for doctors.

Patient app features

  • Exercise programmes: select and perform exercises.
  • Feedback: visual, auditory and tactile cues.
  • Progress: graphs and reports on improvement.
  • Reminders: exercise notifications.

Medical app features

  • Monitoring: analyse exercise data.
  • Adjustment: adjust the rehabilitation programme.
  • Analytics: reports on patient progress.
  • Notifications: signals when changes to the programme are required.

Business Value

The developed system provided the client with a successful entry into the market of home rehabilitation solutions and strengthened its position in the industry. The system provides patients with the accessibility and convenience of home rehabilitation and physicians with the tools to improve the effectiveness of treatment.

Results:

  • Market Entry. Successfully entered the home rehabilitation solutions segment with an innovative product.
  • Audience Expansion. Attracted a new user base seeking convenient and affordable rehabilitation tools.
  • Optimised Development. Accelerated product launch with cross-platform applications and cloud technology, ensuring flexibility across devices.
